Judith Davidson Moyers, president and executive producer for Public Affairs Television for more than 30 years, has many awards including several Emmys. She served as a trustee of the State University of New York and on the U.S. Commission to the United Nations.

Bill Moyers was the founding organizer of the Peace Corps, special assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson, and, for 40 years, an acclaimed journalist for CBS News and PBS, receiving over 37 Emmy awards. Judith and Bill have been married for more than 62 years, and have three children and five grandchildren.  

William Moyers, their son, is vice president of public affairs and community relations for the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. He has appeared on Larry King Live, the Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, and National Public Radio. He has authored several books, including his New York Times best-selling memoir Broken: My Story of Addiction and Redemption.



Christopher B. Smithers is President of The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation and Board Member since 1986.  A U.S. representative to the United Nations, Founder of The Smithers Center at 
Columbia University Medical Center, and an Executive Committee memeber of the R. Brinkley Smithers Institute for Alcoholism Prevention and Workplace Problems at the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. He is a board member of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, an Honorary Director of the Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club, and an Honorary Director of  the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club.

David R. Gastfriend, M.D. is a psychiatrist, internationally recognized addiction treatment researcher, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Treatment Research Institute, and current Chief Medical Officer of DynamiCare Health. In April 2017, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute awarded Dr. Gastfriend the first large-scale trial to integrate the evidence-based practices in the Personalized Addiction Treatment to Health (PATH) model.

The afternoon will offer 3-hour workshops followed by an early career poster session and networking hour.


  •  Workshop Choice 1: Data & Evaluation in Addiction Treatment: The Executive Workforce track will focus on measurement strategies and tracking metrics for prevention and treatment agencies; how to perform research studies independently or in conjunction with clinical scientists from around the country; and how to assess treatment staff preparedness and training. This track is appropriate for individuals established in the field, such as clinical and executive directors of treatment agencies, prevention program directors, and executive board members of professional organizations in the field of addiction are invited.
  •  Workshop Choice 2: Navigating the Addiction Field in NJ: The Early Career Workforce track will focus on navigating the education, credentialing and licensing requirements in the addiction field; job prospects and opportunities for advancement; and strategies for a healthy and productive career. This track will also feature a panel discussion of key educators, policy makers, and advocates in the field of workforce development. This track is appropriate for individuals interested in entering the addiction workforce or those who have just recently set upon this career path (< 5 years).


Cost: The event is free for everyone. Drug and Alcohol Counselors and Social Workers can receive 5 CE credits for attendance; the cost for CE credits is $50.00.
